Comments by Representative Jim McGovern, who has a broad swath from central and western Massachusetts raised within the House of Representatives about former President Donald Trump's legal troubles were struck from the record Thursday after about an hour's delay.
McGovern, rating member of the Rules Committee, made his comments during a debate on a series of GOP bills related to cryptocurrency and non-citizen voting, per Axios.
“We have a presumptive presidential candidate facing 88 charges and we are prevented from even acknowledging that,” he said. “These are not 'alternative facts'these are true facts.'
McGovern listed charges Trump faces: allegedly covering up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016, alleged conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election and alleged theft of classified information. He also mentioned that Trump was found guilty in civil court of sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll.
“And yet, within the Republican-dominated House of Representatives, it’s OK to speak in regards to the trial, but you have got to call it a farce,” he said, referring to Trump's current trial in the hush money cover-up case.
Rep. Erin Houchin of Indiana immediately demanded that his words be removed from the record.
That caused a delay of about an hour as McGovern, Houchin and Rep. Jerry Carl of Alabama spoke with their teams. Carl was presiding over the ground on the time. Ultimately, Carl ruled that McGovern's comments violated rules against insulting sitting presidents, which also apply to prospective presidential candidates, based on Axios.
Later, Representative Teresa Leger Fernández of New Mexico read a few of McGovern's planned remarks into the record.
In a social media post, McGovern said: quoted A Article about civil proceedings and the excellence between “sexual assault” and “rape”.
