Chaos on I-680 after accident and barricaded suspect

SAN RAMON — Chaos erupted on an East Bay freeway Saturday night after a two-car crash left one automobile stuck within the bushes while the driving force barricaded himself in his vehicle and threatened to hold a gun, authorities said.

That turned out to not be the case, and the CHP took the driving force into custody after San Ramon police deployed an armored rescue tank, authorities said.

It all happened following the accident at roughly 5:20 p.m. on Interstate 680 southbound near the Bollinger Canyon exit ramp.

According to the CHP, nobody was injured within the accident. However, one vehicle got here off the highway exit and landed in a bush. The driver became “extremely agitated,” the agency said.

The CHP said the driving force threatened a passerby who tried to assist him, said he had a gun and in addition threatened firefighters and emergency responders. Because of this, the CHP felt it was essential to shut all lanes of the highway and issue a heavy traffic alert at around 5:50 p.m.

About 50 minutes later, two lanes were opened, and by 7 p.m., all 4 lanes were open, in line with the CHP.

Police also closed San Ramon Valley Boulevard south of Bollinger Canyon Road until about 6:35 p.m.

Meanwhile, San Ramon police also arrived on the scene with an armored rescue vehicle. San Ramon Police Chief Denton Carlson said on X (formerly Twitter) that as officers were making announcements within the vehicle, “the individual exited their vehicle and was taken into custody by CHP personnel.”

The CHP said it later determined the driving force was never carrying a weapon and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence.
