BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers has been ruled out of the All-Star Game due to left shoulder soreness.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Devers has been coping with an injury to his AC joint for a while. Although the 27-year-old Dominican played in Tuesday night's game against Oakland, Cora said “he's been going through some things.”
“As a group, we believe it’s a good time for him to get some rest and take care of it,” Cora said.
Cora said the team has notified Major League Baseball, which can announce a substitute for next Tuesday's game in Arlington, Texas.
Devers has a .293 batting average with 21 home runs and 55 RBIs this season, earning him a 3rd All-Star Game nomination. He hit two home runs in Sunday night's win over New York at Yankee Stadium.
The Red Sox won two of three games against the Yankees and have won 14 of their last 19 games, improving their record to a season-high nine games over .500. Boston is 7½ games behind Baltimore within the AL East and holds the third AL wild-card spot as of Tuesday.
“We all believe there's more to this, we're aiming for something bigger than the All-Star Game,” Cora said. “The fact that he's healthy is the most important thing.”
