Yelp has released its first list of The best Indian restaurants within the countryand a small vegetarian restaurant in San Jose takes second place.
Starting out as a food truck making the rounds at South Bay festivals, Kadhai Kitchen is a three-table operation within the Berryessa neighborhood that makes a speciality of vegetarian fare—mostly takeout.
The Yelp Top 25 announcement states: “This all-vegetarian takeout joint features street food from Maharashtra and northern India. The small menu specializes in pavs – soft and fluffy slider-sized biscuits made from refined Indian wheat flour. The restaurant's specialty is the vada pav, stuffed with potato fritters and topped with spicy garlic-coriander sauce. Yelpers say it rivals any in Mumbai itself.”
According to a review by Elite Yelper member Shraddha N., “They even serve it with their own homemade buns, which is a total game changer!”
The top-ranked place within the country, based on this Yelp survey, is Mirchi Indian Cuisine, a halal restaurant in Newbury Park in Ventura County. Customers rate it highly for its tikka masala with chicken, fish or shrimp.
Although California takes the highest two spots on the list, most of the Indian restaurants reviewed are situated on the East Coast, from Essex Junction, Vermont, to Venice, Florida. Other notable options within the Western United States include Rutba Indian Kitchen in Las Vegas (No. 7); Little India in American Fork, Utah (No. 10); Tandoori Grill in Puyallup, Washington (No. 15); and Bawarchi Indian Cuisine in Sparks, Nevada (No. 25).
