Officials say the suspect was a 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign team says it’s “doing well” after law enforcement an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Officials said the person who opened fire was a 20-year-old from Pennsylvania.

Early Sunday, the FBI identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, because the gunman within the Trump assassination attempt. The agency said the investigation was still lively and ongoing.

Crooks' political affiliation was not immediately clear. Records show Crooks was registered as a Republican voter in Pennsylvania, but federal campaign finance reports also show he donated $15 to a progressive political motion committee on Jan. 20, 2021, the day President Joe Biden was sworn in.

What happened within the shooting at a Trump rally?

In a social media post, Trump said he was “struck by a bullet that pierced the top of my right ear.” The former president was quickly escorted off the stage by Secret Service agents, his ear covered in blood.

A prosecutor said the suspected shooter and not less than one bystander were dead, and the Secret Service said two bystanders were seriously injured.

Biden and political leaders of all stripes condemned the attack. “There is no place for this kind of violence in America,” Biden said. “This is sick. This is sick.”

Where is Trump now?

Trump's private jet landed at Newark Liberty International Airport shortly after midnight on Sunday.

Video posted by an assistant shows him getting out, flanked by Secret Service agents and heavily armed members of the agency's counterattack team, an unusually visible demonstration of power by his security force.

Trump had planned to spend the night at his private golf club in nearby Bedminster, New Jersey.

Meanwhile, Biden arrived on the White House early Sunday after cutting short a weekend trip to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

The White House said he can be briefed later that morning by the Department of Homeland Security and law enforcement concerning the attempted assassination of Trump.

Vice President Kamala Harris can be expected to be present.
