Bay Area airport terminals were crowded Friday with people waiting for delayed or canceled flights attributable to a worldwide technology outage that also affected banks, hospitals, court systems and businesses worldwide.
Thousands of individuals at San Francisco International Airport, Mineta San Jose International Airport and San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport needed to rebook their flights after greater than 100 flights between the three airports were canceled.
Thousands more had to attend for his or her regular flights.
Failure was attributable to a faulty software update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike and affected computers running Microsoft Windows.
In San Francisco, 91 flights were canceled and one other 227 were delayed by 12:30 p.m., in line with flight tracking company FlightAware. All of them were domestic flights, in line with the corporate.
“Airport systems are functioning and airlines are reporting that systems are back online,” San Francisco airport spokesman Doug Yakel wrote in an email Friday morning. “The impact on air traffic continues.”
The situation appeared to hit United Airlines and Delta Lines flights to and from San Francisco airport particularly hard. Statistics from FlightAware showed that United had canceled 61 flights to and from the airport and delayed one other 130. Ten Delta flights were canceled and 20 delayed.
The situation was not quite as bad in San Jose or Oakland. According to FlightAware, 13 flights were canceled and 64 were delayed in San Jose. Ten flights to and from Oakland were canceled and 61 were delayed.
Port of Oakland spokesman Robert Bernardo said there have been two complete cancellations on the airport on Friday evening.
Officials said the technical failure could lead to delays and cancellations of flights on Friday. They urged passengers to examine with airlines concerning the status of their flights.
The outage had no impact on cargo shipping operations on the Oakland Seaport, Bernardo said.
