The standoff on I-80 ends when a suspect shooting on the highway shoots, injuring himself

FAIRFIELD – A suspect in a highway shooting Friday night was shot and injured during a standoff with authorities on Interstate 80 in Fairfield, in line with the California Highway Patrol.

The standoff followed a report of a shooting just after 11 a.m. on Highway 101 in Santa Rosa and a police pursuit through several counties, CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said.

Barclay said nobody was injured within the shooting on Highway 101.

The suspect was present in Rohnert Park but drove away from officers once they tried to stop him, Barclay said. Officers pursued him south on Highway 101 into Marin County after which east on State Route 37.

He turned around on Lakeville Highway. The chase then continued west on State Route 37, south on Highway 101, east on Interstate 580 over the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, east on Richmond Parkway and east on the I-80.

According to Barclay, the vehicle struck a spike strip and got here to rest under the Green Valley Road overpass in Fairfield around 3:35 p.m.

About three hours after the altercation began, the suspect shot and injured himself, Barclay said.

The CHP initially reported the suspect died, but he was revived at a neighborhood hospital, in line with Barclay. He was in critical condition late Friday evening.

During the standoff, each directions of I-80 were closed on the Green Valley Road-Interstate 680 interchange. Traffic was backed up for miles.

According to the CHP, the westbound lanes of I-80 and the transition from northbound I-680 to eastbound and westbound I-80 reopened around 6:45 p.m. An hour later, two eastbound lanes of I-80 reopened.

The other three eastbound lanes of I-80 remained closed pending an investigation into the incident.

Update: May 4, 2024: An earlier version of this story, published on May 3, 2024, said the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The California Highway Patrol initially provided this information but later said the suspect was revived at a neighborhood hospital.
