“My name is Kelsey Mann and I'm the director of Inside Out 2. Here in this scene, we see Joy and the primal emotions entering this new space in Riley's imagination. And it's an area that's taken over by fear. She's working with all these thought workers to come up with worst-case scenarios of what could happen to Riley the next day and how she could screw everything up.” “Riley misses an open goal. The coach writes about it in her notebook. Yeah, more like that.” “Oh no. They're using Riley's imagination against her.” “And Joy wants to prevent that at all costs. I always imagined this movie as a movie about fear taking over and thinking about my own life and how my fear does that to me. And as soon as my head hits the pillow, I start thinking about the next day, overthinking and worrying about what could go wrong and how I can somehow avoid those things. And I thought that might be something that a lot of people could relate to.” “Why are you drawing a hippo?” “I'm not. I'm drawing. Riley.” “Joy, you forgot her ponytail.” “Oh, I love her ponytail. Yeah.” “Riley scores and everyone hugs her? 81? That doesn't help.” “Visually, I always imagined this space as a bunch of workers in cubicles. But we thought, well, this place is in fantasy land. How can we make it a little more fun? And it was really — Jason Deamer is our production designer and Josh West is our set designer. They came up with the really fun idea of using giant playing cards as the walls of the cubicles.” “Who sent Riley that projection?” “How was I supposed to know?” “What's going on? Who's sending all this positive — Joy, I know you're in there.” “And then we think, wait a minute, what if the workers are actually animating? What if they're drawing on animation tables?” “Don't listen to Anxiety. She uses these horrible projections to change Riley.” “A lot of it is based on a group of oppressed workers who finally stand up against their employer and their boss. And we were definitely inspired by some of the scenes. I'd like to mention three in particular – 'Field of Dreams' where she stands up and talks about the book burning. Then there's 'Jerry Maguire' where he says, come on everybody. Join in. I quit, come on. And then there's the really iconic 'Norma Rae' scene where she stands up, forms a union, and gets everyone to turn off their devices.” “Yeah, there we have it.” “What if Riley is so bad that she has to give up hockey forever?” “What if Riley does it so well that the coach cries, the Olympics come calling, and she leads a tired nation to victory?” “Uh, Joy, there's reality too.” “And 'Network' too. Anger's speech here was 100 percent influenced by 'Network'.” “Nightmares. But you don't have to put up with that anymore.” “And who better to give a speech like that than Lewis Black?” [MUSIC PLAYING] “Oh, my projections!” “Pillow fight!” “Riley!” “You have to be prepared.”
