Drone helps Campbell police arrest two shoplifters

CAMPBELL — Using drone footage Campbell police arrested a person and woman last week for allegedly stealing from a neighborhood department store, adding to dozens of other cases during which the pair had been arrested in reference to similar crimes.

Police said KC Vernon Pries, 38, of Sunnyvale, and Mary Jo Devera, 48, of San Jose were observed leaving the Kohl's store on Hamilton Avenue in a reportedly stolen vehicle around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday. A store worker said the 2 were “actively removing security sensors from clothing,” police said.

A drone deployed to capture the fleeing man and woman tracked them down and led officers to the couple, who had already fled the stolen automotive on foot.

The drone spotted Pries on a residential roof and Devera was found down the road from the Kohl's store. Both suspects were later arrested, police said.

Police said the automotive Pries and Devera utilized in the shoplifting incident had been reported stolen in San Jose and had stolen license plates. Officers also found stolen property, burglary tools and drug paraphernalia within the automotive.

According to police, Pries has been arrested greater than 25 times since 2004 and Devera eight times since 2001. Pries also violated the terms of his probation, they said.

The two were arrested and put in prison. They are accused of resisting state authority, conspiracy to commit against the law, shoplifting, automotive theft and possession of burglary tools, theft of non-public data and drug paraphernalia.
